People sometimes assume a town the size of Waterford must be short on things to do. Spend a day here and you will think otherwise. Tucked into Norfolk County about 25 minutes south of Brantford, this pretty pond-side village is known as Ontario’s pumpkin capital, and it pairs small-town charm with a genuinely full calendar of trails, gardens, history, and one of the best fall festivals in the province. Here are the things worth doing in and around Waterford.
Waterford Pumpkinfest
If you do one thing in Waterford, make it Pumpkinfest. Run entirely by volunteers from the Waterford Lions for more than 40 years, it is recognized as one of Ontario’s top 100 festivals and takes over the whole town for a weekend each October (the 2026 festival runs October 16 to 18). Expect a giant parade, a huge car show, a soap box derby, a midway, fireworks, an artists’ marketplace, a spookhouse, a craft beer garden, and live music across three days, with events at the arena, the ball diamonds, and the Old Town Hall stage. It is the heartbeat of the community and a wonderful introduction to it. You can find the schedule at pumpkinfest.com.
The Waterford Heritage Trail and the ponds
Waterford grew up around its ponds, and the Waterford Heritage Trail is the best way to enjoy them. This former rail line, now a level walking and cycling path, winds past the water and through quiet woods, with parking at several points around town. It is a favourite for an easy stroll, a bike ride, or a morning of birdwatching, and the ponds themselves are popular for paddling and fishing.
The highlight along the way is the Black Bridge, a century-old high-level former rail bridge stretching about 166 metres, with sweeping views over the ponds and the Norfolk County countryside. It is a local landmark and a favourite photo stop, and on the walk in you will often spot herons, turtles, deer, and the occasional wild turkey.
Whistling Gardens
A short drive away in Wilsonville sits one of Canada’s finest botanical gardens. Whistling Gardens spans more than 20 acres and is home to North America’s largest public peony and conifer collections, over 4,500 different plants in all, plus an aviary and a remarkable stone fountain amphitheatre inspired by Versailles, with musical fountain shows that run daily through the season. The gardens are open from spring until the Monday after Thanksgiving, with special evening Festival of Fountains shows in late summer. It is the kind of place visitors are amazed to find tucked into Norfolk County. Details and seasonal hours are at whistlinggardens.ca.
Waterford North Conservation Area
Operated by the Long Point Region Conservation Authority, Waterford North is a favourite for anglers and families alike. Its three ponds, Bass Lake, Willow Pond, and Pickerel Lake, are stocked with pike, bass, and panfish, and the area offers about 100 campsites, a small sandy beach, a swimming area, canoe rentals, and shady picnic spots. It is just minutes from the Heritage Trail, so you can easily combine the two for a full day, or settle in for a weekend of camping.
Bonnieheath Estate Lavender & Winery
For a taste of Norfolk County’s agri-tourism, Bonnieheath Estate is a working lavender farm and estate winery and cidery in the countryside near Waterford. In season you can wander the lavender fields and vineyard on a self-guided tour, sample the wines and ciders, and pick up lavender products in the shop. The lavender bloom in summer is the star, and it makes for a relaxed, scenic afternoon. Check their website for current hours and season (and note that pets are not permitted on the farm).
Waterford Heritage & Agricultural Museum
Housed in the historic building locals know as the Pickle Factory, this community museum tells the story of Waterford’s agricultural roots and social history through the years. It is family-friendly and often hosts events and exhibitions, making it a great rainy-day stop and a genuine window into what shaped the town. It is also one of the venues that comes alive during Pumpkinfest weekend.
Downtown, antiques, and the Old Town Hall
Finally, leave time to simply wander. Waterford’s historic main street is dotted with antique and gift shops, cafes, and small businesses, and the town is a well-known stop for antiquing. The beautifully restored Old Town Hall anchors the downtown and hosts concerts and arts events throughout the year. It is the easy, charming side of Waterford, and often the part people remember most.
For a small town, Waterford offers a surprising amount: a beloved festival, trails and ponds, world-class gardens nearby, history, and that unhurried Norfolk County pace, all within easy reach of Brantford. It is little wonder more people are choosing to call the area home.
