Fun Outdoor Winter Activities To Do In Brantford

In Brantford and Brant County, winter is not a season to hibernate through. With the right layers and a little sense of adventure, the cold months are full of things to do outside, from skating under the lights downtown to flying down a toboggan hill, gliding along a snowy trail, or ringing in the New Year with fireworks. Here are some of our favourite ways for families to make the most of winter, right here at home.

Lace up at an outdoor rink

Skating outdoors is a Canadian rite of passage, and Brantford makes it easy. The centrepiece is the refrigerated outdoor rink at Harmony Square in the heart of downtown, which is free, open through the winter when weather permits, and surrounded by cafes and restaurants for warming up after. Beyond the square, the City of Brantford and the County of Brant maintain a number of volunteer-built neighbourhood rinks each winter, in parks across Brantford, Paris, St. George, and Mt. Pleasant, when the cold cooperates. Since those community rinks depend on the weather and on local volunteers, it is worth checking the City and County websites for the current list and conditions before heading out. Bring your own skates, and if anyone in the family needs a pair, the City even runs a Community Skate Exchange for gently used skates.

Be dazzled by the Brantford Lights at Glenhyrst

Holiday lights display at Glenhyrst in Brantford

Every December, the grounds of the Glenhyrst Art Gallery transform into a glowing winter wonderland for the Brantford Lights, a beloved community tradition that has been running for well over a decade. Thousands of colourful bulbs light up the gardens in the shapes of candy canes, reindeer, Santa’s sleigh, and more, and you can wander through on foot or take a slow drive around the circular driveway. Admission is free, with donations gratefully accepted for local food banks, and on some evenings you will find hot chocolate and a visit from Santa himself. It is an easy, magical outing that puts everyone in the holiday spirit. You can find the dates each year at glenhyrst.ca.

Ring in the New Year at Harmony Square

New Year's Eve celebration with fireworks at Harmony Square in Brantford

Brantford throws one of the best small-city New Year’s Eve parties around, and the whole thing is free. Each December 31st, Harmony Square hosts a DJ Skate Party where you can glide around the ice to live music, while the historic Sanderson Centre for the Performing Arts puts on a free concert just across the street. The night builds to a dazzling fireworks display over downtown at midnight, drawing thousands of residents together to welcome the new year. Add free hot chocolate, a photo booth, and a genuine community feel, and it is a wonderful alternative to staying in. The City posts the lineup each year at Brantford.ca.

Join the fun at Winter Fun Fest

Family Day weekend winter activities in downtown Brantford

The Family Day long weekend in February is the highlight of Brantford’s winter calendar. The City’s Winter Fun Fest takes over Harmony Square and the neighbouring One Market with a packed lineup of family activities: skating on the outdoor rink, classic s’mores by a campfire, horse-drawn trolley rides through downtown, games, and indoor fun hosted by Wilfrid Laurier’s downtown campus. Over the same weekend you can swim and skate at the Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre, and tour Alexander Graham Bell’s historic home at the Bell Homestead for a special rate. Most of it is free, and it is a brilliant way to spend the long weekend with the kids. (Longtime locals will fondly remember Frosty Fest, the much-loved winter carnival that ran downtown for years; Winter Fun Fest now carries the torch as the city’s big winter celebration.) Find the schedule at Brantford.ca/WinterFunFest.

Head for the hills

Children tobogganing down a snowy hill near Brantford

Few things capture winter quite like flying down a hill on a toboggan. The City of Brantford maintains a dedicated sledding hill at Arrowdale Community Park (282 Stanley Street), prepared and inspected by Parks staff each winter and open daily from dawn to dusk, weather permitting. Over in the County of Brant, there are designated tobogganing spots too, including Bemrose Park in Paris (the north side of the hill) and King William Park in St. George. Sticking to the designated hills keeps everyone safer, so check the City and County websites for the current list, follow the posted rules, and remember that sledding is always at your own risk. Pack a sturdy sled, dress in warm layers, and a helmet is never a bad idea for the little ones.

Glide along the trails

Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on a snowy Brantford trail

The same trail network locals love in the summer becomes a quiet, snowy playground in winter, perfect for cross-country skiing, Nordic poling, and snowshoeing. The SC Johnson Trail and the old rail trails running from Brantford toward Paris and Cambridge offer flat, scenic terrain that is easy on beginners, while the conservation areas around the region, like Apps’ Mill and Brant Park, are wonderful for snowshoeing through the woods. It is a peaceful, healthy way to soak up the season, and most of it is completely free. If you are after downhill skiing or snowboarding, the nearest hills are a short drive toward Kitchener, such as Chicopee, with the bigger resorts up around Collingwood about two hours north.

Take a ride into the countryside

Snowmobiling on a groomed trail in Brant County

When the snow really flies, Brant County and the rural areas to the north and west open up some excellent snowmobiling. Ontario’s trails are built and groomed by volunteer clubs under the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC), and you will need a valid trail permit to ride. Because conditions can change quickly with the weather, always check the OFSC’s online Interactive Trail Guide for real-time trail status before you set out, ride responsibly, and keep a close eye on younger riders. In a good snow year, it is one of the most exhilarating ways to experience the winter countryside. You can find permits, trail maps, and conditions at ofsc.on.ca.

Warm up the Brantford way

Warming up with a Nutella treat and hot chocolate after a winter day

After a few hours in the cold, nothing beats warming up with a hot chocolate or a sweet treat at one of the cafes around Harmony Square or along downtown’s main streets. And here is a bit of local pride to savour while you do: Brantford is the Canadian home of Nutella. Ferrero’s largest plant in North America sits right here in the city, producing Nutella along with Ferrero Rocher, Tic Tac, and Kinder treats, and it is one of Brantford’s biggest employers. So that warm, chocolatey-hazelnut treat you reach for after a day on the ice? There is a very good chance it was made just down the road.

Winter is one more reason we love calling Brantford and Brant County home. Between the rinks, the lights, the festivals, the trails, and the hills, there is always a way to get outside and enjoy the season together. And if finding a home close to all of it is on your wish list, we would love to help, whether you are ready to start the buying process or simply exploring the area. Browse homes for sale locally or reach out to our team any time, and stay warm out there.
